Chiropractic Technique
One of the main chiropractic techniques that Dr. Wasserman, Chiropractor, utilizes under the veterinarians is V.O.M. (Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation), a technology that was developed in 1983 by W. Inman, D.V.M. that provides an alternative, non-surgical approach to spinal disorders and lameness. Now, many disorders can be treated by VOM, a noninvasive, non-painful, and inexpensive healing alternative.
Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation (VOM)
What is VOM?
It is a healing technology that locates areas of the animals nervous system that are blocked due to a spinal subluxation. A subluxation results when a spinal bone loses their normal position or motion, which results in nervous system dysfunction due to nerve impingement which may result in altered health and/or pain. VOM re-establishes neuronal communication and thus induces healing.
History and Development of VOM
VOM was developed by William Inman, DVM in Seattle, Washington, while in clinical practice in 1982. Dr. Inman is an accomplished surgeon and began using these non-invasive techniques in his practice because he was frustrated at times with the ineffective use of medications and surgical solutions to common veterinary medical problems.
How VOM Works
By using a hand held device called a spinal accelerator or activator, this device delivers its force to the subluxated vertebra thereby reducing the subluxations by providing motion into the fixated or subluxated joint and by taking pressure off the spinal nerve. It looks like a spring-loaded doorstop. This device and method of spinal adjusting was developed by Arlan Fuhr, D.C. It provides a very accurate and precise motion to specific areas of the pet’s spine and if a subluxation is present it can detect and reduce it quickly without pain or injury to your pet.
What Will Happen to My Pet?
After a thorough consultation, Dr. Wasserman, Chiropractor, will evaluate your pets gait, do a chiropractic orthopedic and neurological exam, and palpate the spine and associated surrounding soft tissues. Then he will run the activator device down the pets spine called a diagnostic VOM pass and search for pathological reads that indicate subluxations. The subluxations are found, recorded, and adjusted. A series of adjustments over a certain time period may be needed to reach a point where no reads are found in which the subluxation pattern is reduced and your pet’s condition is improved. The average case will see some sort of positive response within the first week.
Can the Device and VOM Harm My Pet?
No, No, No!!! The beauty of VOM is that it provides the exact amount of force to the subluxated joint needed to reduce the subluxation without having to involve body motion. There is no torsion, twisting, or mass movement in VOM as in manual adjusting techniques. Manual techniques are slow and the animals natural reflex is to resist that kind of adjustment. VOM requires minimal cooperation and relaxation from the pet and can be adjusted in most any position, attitude, or mood.
Does VOM Always Work?
No. Treatment failures occur when: neurological damage is too extensive and permanent (too much serious injury for too long), and when the VOM treatment schedule in not kept for your pet.
What will It Cost?
Your veterinary faciltiy will generate an estimate for you including projected costs.
How Many Adjustments Will it Take?
The answer is simple, as many adjustments as necessary to eliminate the joint dysfunction, nerve irritation, and allow the innate healing power of the pets body to keep it stable.
Low Level Laser
In addition to the adjustment/VOM, your doctor may recommend laser therapy.
Laser is a non-thermal laser which is capable of penetrating deep into tissue, promoting the process known as photobiostimulation. This increases the rate of cellular metabolism, which increases cellular repair and stimulates the immune, lymphatic and vascular systems, thus helping to reduce pain, inflammation, edema and healing times.
